St. Vincent’s Hospital
27-part gel transfer on panel
12 x12 inches
This panel is part of a series I created for the “Shinobi Marilyn” show at Emily Amy Gallery. This panel differs from the rest in that the text replacing the eyes is borrowed from the refrain of "Surgeon", a song by St Vincent. Incidentally, the refrain itself is taken from a dream journal entry by Monroe.
Since this particular series of panels involves quite a lot of cutting and reassembly, the idea of the surgeon made perfect sense. To push it a little further, I decided to frankenstein the fragments of 8 of the 9 versions of Monroe, shuffling the tops and bottoms in purposefully mismatched, janky arrangements. The only unshuffled Marilyn is at center, flanked by a 4-eyed and an eyeless version of herself.
